How do I clean synthetic hankies – like the ones from around WWII?

The synthetic hankies I know best are those flimsy, really lacy-looking ones in solid colors. I have a few that mention different countries; Mexico, especially. I tried machine washing these and they just disintegrated. Your best bet is gently soaking them in a mild detergent or hand soap in the sink or a bowl for, say, an hour. Lukewarm water. Then rinse and lay flat to dry. (The iron will shred them too – I also found that out the hard way!)
